Preload

Preload is a concept used in linear and rotary motion systems to prevent backlash in the system causing unwanted error motion.  Part tolerances create clearances between parts that allows for slip or wobble called back lash

A preload force, typically springs, can be applied to the system to align the parts against each other and prevent backlash.

Our project explored Hirth couplings which need to be preloaded to prevent disengagement of the gears.
